O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family raised her by their parents who resided in Wheaton located in Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. The model appeared in commercials for some time prior to moving in Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress in Montgomery Ward. She made her debut on screen in the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on a number of other shows as well as appeared in made-for television and independent movies. Her first big role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary between 1993 and 1996. Each year she was awarded an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Along with her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 1995.
